Pioneering Culinary Fermentation

Planit POD is more than a project — it is a venture conceived, funded, and built by DuPuis Group, giving us the opportunity to apply the same strategic and creative disciplines we bring to our clients to a business of our own.

The idea was passionately pursued by our founder, Steven DuPuis, and his late wife, Joy, both advocates for plant-forward living. It started with a simple question: What if fermentation could help create a new generation of plant-based foods?

From the early concept and consumer research through invention, strategy, industrial design, branding, engineering, commercialization, and launch, Planit POD has brought together nearly every capability within DuPuis. In partnership with Waring, we introduced the product to the foodservice industry at the 2026 NRA Show, where it received the Kitchen Innovations Best of Show award — a meaningful recognition for a vision that has been more than a decade in the making.

Challenge

For years, the plant based protein category had largely focused on imitating meat. But consumers and chefs were looking for something different—better flavor, more creativity, and a plant based experience that could stand on its own. The opportunity was to move beyond the idea of meat alternatives and rethink what plant protein could be from the ground up, using the transformative potential of fermentation to create an entirely new experience of plant based consumption and enjoyment.

Action Taken

DuPuis led the innovation journey from initial insight through commercialization, exploring how fermentation could open up new possibilities for plant based flavor. Guided by consumer research and culinary exploration, we developed the Planit Protein platform and positioned the Planit POD as a new kind of kitchen appliance—one that gives chefs and food innovators the tools to create new flavors using koji culture and purpose built Ground Protein.

DuPuis led every aspect of the venture, including innovation strategy, positioning, naming, branding, industrial design direction, packaging, photography, messaging, digital experience, and commercialization. Every decision was anchored in one clear belief: plant protein shouldn't try to imitate meat—it should stand on its own.

Results

The work transformed Planit Protein into a category defining platform rooted in fermentation, culinary creativity, and authentic flavor. The strategy resonated with chefs, food innovators, and industry partners, culminating in the launch of Planit POD with Waring at the National Restaurant Association Show, where it received the prestigious Kitchen Innovations Best of Show Award.

More than a product launch, Planit POD demonstrates the full power of the DuPuis innovation process—transforming a bold idea into an award winning venture through strategy, design, engineering, branding, and commercialization.
